Nothing says Spring like bouquet of tulips. I love a bouquet of freshly pick tulips sitting on our kitchen table! Did you know that tulip stems will continue to grow in the vase up to an inch or more. They are also phototrophic meaning that they will stretch towards the light – so turning your vase daily can help keep your blooms staying more upright.
When properly cared for tulips can last for 7-10 days in the vase!
Here are some tips for the longest – lasting tulips:
– Tight buds: When purchasing tulips choose ones with tight buds this will ensure the longest vase life.
- Cutting: Recut your stems before placing them in their final vase. Be sure to cut your stems on a diagonal about a half an inch from the bottom – this will ensure that the most water can be absorbed by the stems.
- Vase: Be sure to wash your vase prior to arranging your tulips in it – cleaning you vases helps to remove any bacteria that can shorten the life of your tulips.
- As a rule of thumb your bouquet should be about one and a half times the height of your vase – but to be honest I always love to experiment with stem lengths and containers. So my rule of thumb says to arrange them however it brings you joy!
- Water: Tulips love water and are big drinkers! Fill vase with lukewarm water (not ice cold) – because it is better absorbed by the stems.
- Check your water level daily – and keep the level topped off. Change your water every 3-4 days or sooner if you see the water becomes cloudy.
- Floral preservative/ flower food can be helpful for extending flower life when compared to other folk remedies like lemon-lime soda, a teaspoon of sugar and a penny.
- Location, Location, Location !
- Where you place your vase is very important – remember to keep your tulips in a cool place out of direct sun.
Brighten your day and home with a fresh flower bouquet!
